UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) is an acronym often envisioned as a wingless, disc-shaped craft originating from extraterrestrial civilizations far superior to our own. This universal human fascination with alien intelligence can be seen as a metaphor for how “advanced” cultures measure and analyze others—a top-down gaze operating beyond the reach of the naked eye, descending only to conduct close-range observations of the earth’s surface.
In the context of this exhibition, this celestial, “top-down” perspective is transformed into a rigorous observation of terrestrial civilization. Densely packed rooftops, intricate tile patterns, and the crisscrossing river networks are re-envisioned as physical evidence captured and scrutinized by a “higher civilization.” This is not merely an iconographic archaeology based on visual neurology; it is a profound decoding of fifty years of geographical transformation in the Pearl River Delta. These aerial images function as the manifested DNA of the earth, revealing the complex expressions and cultural imprints left by social landscapes across the flow of time and space.
