杉本博司 Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto is a contemporary artist, photographer, and architect often referred to as “the last modernist.” His multidisciplinary practice explores the nature of time, the origins of human perception, and the material vestiges of history. Renowned for his minimalist visual language and mastery of long-exposure photography, his iconic series include Seascapes, Theaters, and Sea of Buddha. By capturing vast historical moments and natural phenomena within a spectrum of exquisite black-and-white tones, Sugimoto constructs a spiritual realm that transcends the dimensions of reality.

Sugimoto’s work has earned international acclaim, including the Hasselblad Foundation International Award and the Praemium Imperiale. His works are held in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate Modern. In recent years, he established the New Material Research Laboratory, extending his practice into architecture and spatial design, exemplified by the Enoura Observatory. He currently lives and works in Tokyo and New York.
