The Seascapes series, which Hiroshi Sugimoto began in 1980, represents a pinnacle of his practice in elevating photography to a form of philosophical inquiry. The series originated from a fundamental question: “Can someone today view a scene just as a primitive person might have?” To explore this, Sugimoto traveled to coastlines worldwide, employing a minimalist composition that bisects the frame into equal parts sea and sky, stripped of all human or transient traces. Sugimoto believes that amidst constant change, only the sea remains unaltered since ancient times. Through long exposures and infinite focus, he encapsulates the flow of time within a single frame, awakening primordial memories and inviting viewers to engage in a silent dialogue between existence and eternity.
